What to expect…
Your patient pathway
Your patient pathway with Professor Murray Barclay will depend on why your GP has referred you. From your referral letter, Professor Barclay will consider whether he would like to see you for a consultation or to investigate your condition via an endoscopy procedure (gastroscopy and/or colonoscopy). All relevant information will be provided well ahead of your appointment.
The most frequently performed procedures are Gastroscopy, to investigate the oesophagus, stomach and top of the small intestine, and Colonoscopy to examine the large bowel. You will be advised what you need to do to prepare for each procedure. This may involve a few hours without food or a bowel cleansing preparation. This is to ensure the best possible view of the lining of the gut.
Sedation through a vein, administered by Professor Barclay, makes you relaxed and sleepy at the time of the procedure. You can choose not to be sedated if you prefer.
An Endoscopy involves slowly passing a thin flexible tube, fitted with a tiny camera, through the area of investigation. Images are displayed on a screen, which allows the endoscopist to see clearly any abnormalities or concerns. Imaging is taken which forms part of a report which will be sent to your GP. You will be given a copy of this on departure.
The endoscopist may also perform small interventions at the time of your endoscopy such as taking small biopsies (samples) or removing a polyp to prevent cancer. More complex interventions will be performed after discussion with you.
Professor Barclay will come and see you after your procedure to explain the findings and any treatments that may be required. It can be helpful to have a support person with you at this time to help you remember what is discussed.
