Frequently asked questions
-
Yes. All patients require a referral from a GP or another specialist that provides us with your details, why you need specialist care and a history of your condition. From the referral information Professor Barclay will consider whether he would like to see you for a consultation in his rooms or if it would be more helpful to investigate your condition via endoscopic procedure. Our reception staff will contact you to make the appointment and provide you with any information about this.
-
Yes. A quote will be prepared for you detailing the anticipated charges. This quote will be required to obtain pre-approval if you have medical insurance.
In the case of Southern Cross and NIB, pre-approval will be obtained by us on your behalf.
-
Once we receive your referral, you will be offered the first available appointment. The timing of this may reflect the nature of your condition and the number of patients waiting to see Professor Barclay.
-
Your consultation appointment will allow plenty of time for Professor Barclay to thoroughly discuss your symptoms and concerns. Appointments are generally between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Please allow plenty of time for your consultation in case the clinic is running a little late.
-
Professor Barclay will take a full medical history from you and discuss your symptoms and concerns. From this he may suggest a diagnosis and treatment plan. He may arrange further investigations, most often including endoscopy, which he will perform at a later time at a specialist endoscopy centre. The proposed investigations and treatments, and any risks that might be associated, will be fully discussed with you. Your treatment may also involve referral to a dietician or other health professional.
You are welcome to ask any questions at any time throughout the consultation. You are also welcome to bring another person with you for support or to help you remember what has been talked about.
During consultation, Professor Barclay may ask to examine you, including your abdomen, to assist with diagnosis. There will usually be no need to undress. You may bring or ask for a chaperone.
-
We appreciate a long wait can be a concern. If your condition gets worse before you see Professor Barclay please contact your GP.
-
Before your procedure you will be sent an information pack. This will include forms that will need to be sent directly to the centre, information about your procedure and preparation needed, and clear instructions on when to arrive at the centre. On your arrival, nursing staff will make sure you are ready for your procedure. They will accompany you to the endoscopy room and through to recovery after your procedure. For more information on each procedure see our Patient Information.
-
Consultation charges generally range between $250 and $550, depending on the time allowed to review your condition. Please feel free to ask at the time your appointment is booked.
Endoscopy procedure charges are comprised of (1) Professor Barclay’s fee and (2) the fees charged by the endoscopy facility where the procedure is performed. These can vary considerably and will be quoted for you by our reception staff.
The cost to you for consultation and/or treatment will depend on whether you have medical insurance, your insurers excess/co-payment and the consultations, treatments and investigations that your policy covers. Endoscopy Procedures are considered as surgery for ‘surgery only’ polices.
-
If you are insured with Southern Cross or NIB - Professor Barclay is an affiliated provider. This allows us to obtain preapproval and claim charges on your behalf. You will be responsible for paying any shortfall that is not covered by your policy at the time of the consultation or procedure.
All patients other than those insured with Southern Cross and NIB are required to pay for their consultations and procedure costs at time of leaving the rooms or endoscopy centre. You may pay by credit card.
Professor Barclay’s specialist fee for procedures will be billed within a week of your procedure and must be paid for promptly. You may lodge a claim with your insurer for them to pay us but this must also be done promptly with any excess paid to us.
-
Depending on what Professor Barclay finds on examination at your endoscopy he may be able to arrange treatment for this at the time of endoscopy. He will explain this in detail and in your copy of the report. Please see our Patient Information Page.
